No sooner had the reverberation of my blows sunk into silence (не успел отзвук моих ударов погрузиться в тишину = затихнуть; sooner – раньше: «не раньше звук затих, чем…»; to sink – тонуть, погружаться), than I was answered by a voice from within the tomb (как мне ответил голос изнутри склепа: «мне было отвечено голосом…»; than – чем)! – by a cry, at first muffled and broken, like the sobbing of a child (криком, сперва приглушенным и прерывистым, как плач ребенка), and then quickly swelling into one long, loud, and continuous scream (а затем быстро разросшимся в один долгий, громкий и непрерывный ор), utterly anomalous and inhuman – a howl – a wailing shriek (совершенно ненормальный и нечеловеческий – вой – жалобный визг), half of horror and half of triumph (наполовину – ужаса и наполовину – торжества), such as might have arisen only out of hell (такой, какой мог вырваться лишь из ада; to arise – восстать), conjointly from the throats of the damned in their agony (сообща из глоток проклятых в их муках) and of the demons that exult in the damnation (и /из глоток/ бесов, которые буйно радуются проклятию).

Of the doctrines themselves – that is, of their falsity, or of their probability – I say nothing (о самих этих доктринах – то есть об их ложности или же об их возможности – я не говорю ничего). I assert, however, that much of our incredulity (я утверждаю, однако, что большая часть нашего неверия) – as La Bruyère says of all our unhappiness (как Лабрюйер говорит обо всех наших несчастиях) – “vient de ne pouvoir être seuls («происходит от неспособности быть в одиночестве» – фр.).”

Horror and fatality have been stalking abroad in all ages. Why then give a date to this story I have to tell?
