Hiljem on ta laiendanud oma huviringi ja ajaloohaaret kõigile kolmele Baltimaale 13. sajandist tänapäevani. Pärast iseseisva Eesti taastamist on ta tegelnud peamiselt Eesti uusima ajalooga. 2014. aastal pälvis ta Eesti riigi elutööpreemia tulemusliku teadustegevuse eest.
